Fifty-three-year-old Vadim Pankov took charge of the Russia Women's National Team at the start of this year, replacing Konstantin Ushakov. He began his coaching career alongside legendary coach Nikolay Karpol at Uralochka. He has also led Russia's student team, winning gold twice at the 2015 and 2017 Universiades. At club level, Pankov steered Zarechie Odintsovo from relative obscurity to two titles of the Russian Superleague, as well as the 2014 CEV Challenge Cup. He was married to the late Marina Nikulina, Seoul 1988 Olympic champion and 1990 world champion. His daughter Ekaterina was the setter and captain of the Russian National Team and a two-time European champion, and his son Pavel has won numerous world and European championships titles at youth and junior level.
