Turkey need win over Thailand to stay ahead in race for finals

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 5, 2018 - Thailand host Turkey, Wednesday in Nakhon Ratchasima, looking to put an end to their four-match losing streak at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. But Turkey, who lead the head-to-head between the two sides 2-1, are also in need of a win to keep them ahead of Russia in the race for a ticket to the finals of the competition.

Head-to-Head
• Thailand and Turkey have met three times before at major world level tournaments.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• Turkey won their first two world level major tournament matches against Thailand: 3-1 at the 2012 World Grand Prix and 3-0 at the 2013 World Grand Prix.
• Thailand beat Turkey 3-0 in the 2017 World Grand Prix, the most recent world level major tournament match between the countries. That was also their only previous encounter in Thailand.

Thailand
• Thailand lost 3-1 against Korea on Tuesday to suffer their fourth VNL defeat in a row.
• Thailand have now lost eight of their 10 matches at the 2018 Nations League, including all four at home.
• The last time Thailand won a major world level home fixture was on 23 July 2017, when they beat Italy in straight sets in Bangkok at the 2017 World Grand Prix.
• Thailand's two wins at the 2018 VNL came against Argentina (3-0) on 17 May and versus Poland (3-2) on 24 May.

Turkey
• Turkey beat Japan 3-1 on Tuesday to claim their seventh victory at the 2018 VNL (W7-L3).
• Turkey could now win eight fixtures at a single major world level tournament for the first time since the 2014 World Grand Prix (8).
• Two of Turkey's three defeats at the 2018 VNL have come in five sets. They have only once lost three five-setters at a single major world level tournament, at the 2014 World Grand Prix.
• Meryem Boz (129) and Eda Erdem Dundar (120) have both scored more than 100 VNL points for Turkey.
