Korea look for first win over Germany in 24 years

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 22, 2018 - Korea and Germany meet Saturday in Tehran for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, with the Asians looking for their first win over the European side since the 1994 FIVB World League. In the meantime, Germany have won their last two encounters with Korea in the same 1994 competition and at the 2014 FIVB World Championship.

Head-to-Head
• Germany have won their last two matches against Korea at world level major tournaments, a 3-0 win at the world championships in 2014 and a 3-1 win at the World League in 1994.
• Korea's last win came at that same World League in 1994, 3-0.
• World level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World League and Grand Champions Cup.
• Three of Korea's four wins against German sides came in straight sets.
• The Koreans have lost all five matches against European teams at the Nations League.

Germany
• Germany won 3-2 against Bulgaria on Friday, for their first five-set win in a world level major tournament since the 2014 World League.
• Germany have now won six VNL matches. They have won more than six matches in only one of their previous five participations at a world level major competition: nine at the 2014 World Championship.
• Germany can win successive matches for the second time this Nations League, after winning against Poland (3-1), United States (3-0) and Canada (3-1).
• Moritz Reichert scored a team-high 19 points against Bulgaria, all his points came from spikes.

Korea
• Korea lost 3-1 against Iran on Friday. It was their 12th defeat in 13 VNL matches.
• Korea only once suffered more losses at a single world level tournament, 15 at the 1993 World League.
• Korea could lose more than eight matches in straight sets at a single world level major tournament for the second time, after the 1993 World League (12).
• Song Myung-Geun and Na Gyeong-Bok were the team's top scorers against Iran on 13 points each.
