On the debut season under Coach Marcelo Mendez orders, the Argentina men´s national team had a highlighted year with the qualification to Tokio 2020 guaranteed after prevailing in the Intercontinental Olympic Qualifier in China against Canada, Finland and the host. Also, the Argentines got the gold medal in the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru and played their second VNL as core nation. The World Cup will be the last official competition for the team in 2019.
In 2016, the Argentines showed its quality, finishing fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. They also won bronze at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, their highest placing in seven appearances at the Games.
Argentina’s first World Championship appearance came in 1960 when the team finished 11th in Rio, and last year was the nation’s 12th appearance at the event. Argentina’s highest-ranked finish in the competition was in 1982 when, as hosts they won a bronze medal following a 3-0 win over Japan.
Fourth remains Argentina’s highest finish in the FIVB World League, when they lost to hosts Poland in the 2011 bronze medal match. They have also ranked fifth on two occasions, in 2009 and 2010.
Argentina ranked 14th in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League in 2018 and in 2019 they improved the record with an outstanding 7th place after 8 victories and 7 losses including wins against Serbia, France and Italy.
