Korea count on home support for first VNL win against Australia

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 12, 2018 - Korea host Australia Friday for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League and arehoping for fans' support in their first appearance at home to score their first win in the competition. Korea have only picked up two sets thus far, both in their five-set loss to Japan, while Australia registered their second win of the season last weekend, when they beat Germany.

Head-to-Head
• The only previous world level major tournament match between Korea and Australia was at the 2007 World Cup. The Australians won 3-2 in Saitama.
• The world level major tournaments are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World League and Grand Champions Cup.
• Korea and Australia played each other in the quarterfinal of the 2013 Asian Championships. The Koreans won in straight sets in Dubai.

Korea
• Korea have lost all nine VNL matches. All other teams have recorded at least two victories.
• Of Korea's nine VNL defeats, eight were in straight sets. The only exception was a 3-2 loss against Japan on 3 June.
• Korea could lose 10 matches in a single world level major tournament for the first time since the 2015 World League.
• Korea could lose more than eight matches in straight sets in a single world level major tournament for the second time, after the 1993 World League (12).
• Korea have won seven of their last nine world level major tournament matches on home court.

Australia
• Australia have won two of their nine VNL matches, 3-0 against Bulgaria (fixture five) and 3-2 versus Germany (fixture nine).
• Australia have lost four consecutive world level major tournament matches versus Asian opposition.
• Australia could record multiple wins in a deciding set in a single world level major tournament for the third time, after the 2014 World League (4) and 2017 World League (2).
• Luke Perry is ranked as the best digger after the opening three weeks of the VNL, averaging 1.24 per set.
