Germany in bid to end losing streak against Russia

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 23, 2018 - Germany face Russia Thursday in Suwon, lokking at puttin an end to their losing streak of four matches in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, ever since stunning Brazil in their opening game last week. But Russia have only lost twice in 30 matches to any German team at world level.

Head-to-Head
• German teams have won two of the 30 matches against Russia (including the Soviet Union) at world level major tournaments.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• East Germany beat the Soviet Union 3-2 at the 1986 World Championships, and Germany won 3-2 against Russia at the 2004 World Grand Prix.
• Since the start of the century, Germany have only lost more matches at world level major tournaments against China (19), Brazil (18) and Unites States (14) than versus Russia (13).
• Russia have won the last seven matches versus Germany at world level, most recently 3-1 at the 2015 World Grand Prix.

German
• Germany won their opening VNL match, 3-1 against Brazil, but have lost all four since.
• Germany's current four-match VNL losing streak came after they had lost only one of their previous 11 matches at world level major tournaments.
• Germany could lose five consecutive matches at world level major tournaments for the first time since a run of 10 in a row stretching across the World Grand Prix in 2016 and 2017.
• Louisa Lippmann was Germany's leading scorer in four of their five VNL matches. The only exception was the only VNL fixture they won - 3-1 against Brazil when Maren Fromm (19) was their leading scorer.

Russia
• Russia have won three of their five VNL matches. Both of their defeats were in straight sets (versus Netherlands and Korea).
• Each of Russia's last five world level major tournament matches against European opposition were won in straight sets (two wins, three defeats).
• Russia have lost each of their last seven five-setters at world level major tournaments, since a 3-2 win against Italy at the 2016 World Grand Prix.
• Both Natalya Malykh (50.49%) and Irina Voronkova (50%) have a VNL spike success percentage of 50% or higher.
