Canada and Germany clash for second wins in Week 3

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 9, 2018 - Canada and Germany both emerged victorious from their opening matches of Week 3 in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League (over Australia and USA respectively), so both will be looking at doubling their wins of this weekend when they go head-to-head Saturday in Ottawa. They meet for the 10th time in history with Canada leading the series 6-3 - though Germany have won the last two encounters.

Head-to-Head
• Canada and Germany (including as East Germany and West Germany) will meet for the 10th time in world level major competition.
• World level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World League and Grand Champions Cup.
• Germany have defeated Canada in straight sets in each of their last two meetings at major world level tournaments, at the 2010 and 2014 world championships.
• Prior to those two defeats, Canada had a six-match winning streak against Germany (including as East and West Germany) at world level major tournaments.
• Each of the last four matches between Canada and Germany finished after three sets (both two wins), since a 3-2 Canada victory at the 1992 World League.

Canada
• Canada defeated Australia 3-0 on Friday and have now won four successive matches in world level major competition for the first time since 2015-2016, when they won 11 matches in a row at the World Cup and World League.
• Canada can win two successive matches by 3-0 within the same world level major competition since their last two matches in the 2016 World League, when they defeated Turkey and Portugal 3-0.
• Canada have won nine of their last 11 matches on home soil in world level major competitions, including each of the last five, after their defeat against Bulgaria in Summerside in the 2015 World League.
• Stephen Timothy Maar is Canada's top scorer in the VNL on 96 points. He scored a match-high 18 points on Friday, including a match-high 16 from spikes.

Germany
• Germany defeated USA 3-0 on Friday and have now won three of their last four VNL matches, after losing their first three.
• Germany could win three matches in a row for the first time at a world level major tournament, since their first three matches at the 2017 World League.
• Germany have not played a five-setter in any of their last 22 major world level matches, since a 3-2 defeat against Montenegro in their opening fixture of the 2016 World League.
• David Sossenheimer was top scorer in the match against USA, scoring 13 points.
