Olympic champion Walsh Jennings suffers shoulder injury at Moscow Grand Slam

 
Moscow, Russia, May 27, 2015 - Three-time American Olympic champion Kerri Walsh Jennings withdrew from her second pool play match with April Ross here Wednesday during the opening day of Main Draw competition at the Moscow Grand Slam.

Seeded third in the competition, the Americans were leading 5-2 in the first set against Brazilians Carolina Horta and Liliane Maestrini when Walsh Jennings was stretching for the ball and injured her right shoulder.  After a medical timeout, the match did not resume and the Americans forfeited the contest.

After forfeiting the match, Walsh Jennings retired to her hotel room next to the venue at the Vodny Stadium Beach Sports Center.  There was no comment from either Walsh Jennings or Ross after the match or later at the hotel.

Any decision on the American's playing their final Pool C Thursday against the Salgado sisters (Carolina and Maria Clara) is not known at this time.  The Salgados lead the pool with a 2-0 record with of the Ross and Walsh Jennings 1-1 after defeating compatriots Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) in an opening match Wednesday morning.  The Salgados defeated Carol and Liliane 2-0 (25-3, 21-13).

Ross and Walsh Jennings are the defending Moscow Grand Slam gold medal winners after defeating Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima of Brazil 2-1 (21-17, 22-24, 15-13) in the 52-minute gold medal match last year.
