Our young players really helped us: Serbia captain

Toyama, Japan, September 23, 2019 – Serbia defeated Cameroon 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-17) in the second match on the seventh day of the FIVB Women’s World Cup at Toyama City Gymnasium on Monday.

Serbia coach Aleksandar Vladisavljev: "After yesterday’s tough match against Russia, today we had two main tasks: to try to win in three sets and to get our bench players on to the court. We managed to do both today. Our task for tomorrow will be similar to the other matches: to play a good game and to come back to our level of playing like we have since the start of the tournament."

Serbia captain Ana Bjelica: "We played really well with concentration and we did what we had to do with good motivation. Also, our young players showed that they can play at a higher level and I’m really happy because of this. Tomorrow, we play with Korea and it’s a very important game for us, so I hope we will show what we’ve shown so far in these six matches and that we’ll have the same result."

Cameroon assistant coach Neba Anomah: "Today, we had a game against a tough team in Serbia and unfortunately we lost again. We are trying to improve our playing style, to copy from what the best nations in the world are doing today. The match was in two stages. The first set, we really pushed in our efforts and our service reception was good. The second set was where we failed again because of our efforts. In this type of competition, there is a physical impact on all the players and we have one or two who are injured, so it’s more important for a team coming to this type of competition who want to be completely effective to have a team that’s growing together. In that light, we have a team that’s been turned around with young players, not because they are better than all the players on court but we need to have everybody to participate so we have fewer injuries. Our young players came in and we had to push and we succeeded in our efforts. Today, we were playing at our level and tomorrow we will prepare again and try to be better than today. The objective against Argentina will be the same as in previous games. We go in with the intention of winning and anything we can get that’s beneficial will only help the team to grow. We try to take the positive things so that the team can move ahead."

Cameroon captain Nana Christelle Tchoudjang: "We lost the game. I thought in the first set, we could have done better but our own mistakes led to that result. We tried to get sideouts but that didn’t go well. Tomorrow, we will try to play our game. The purpose of volleyball is to win, so we’ll try our best."
