I'm happy the whole team could play today: Netherlands coach

Toyama, Japan, September 22, 2019 – The Netherlands beat Cameroon 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-18) in the second match on the sixth day of the FIVB Women’s World Cup at Toyama City Gymnasium on Sunday.

Netherlands coach Jamie Morrison: "Cameroon is a good volleyball team that plays with a lot of spirit and energy. I’m happy that my team came out and played the way we did and matched that energy. I think that we improved on some things that we learned in the last match against Serbia. We have a very good volleyball team with lots of good players. This is a very long tournament and we need to find places for those players to play, so I’m happy that our whole team went out and played well today. For tomorrow, Korea is a very good volleyball team and I think that we need to be very precise and aggressive with our serve, and I think we need to do a good job in block and defence. They run a faster offence and they hit in places that some other teams don’t, so we’ll work on that."

Netherlands captain Maret Balkestein-Grothues: "Today, we did a solid job. In the second set our block and defence was very good. Of course, we can improve on the little things, but in the end I’m satisfied with this victory and I’m proud of the team. Every day everybody tries to play their best and improve. We can’t practice much in this tournament so we must be very focused on game days and give it our all. In the match against Serbia, we had too many ups and downs, so we have to be more stable and get out of rotations fast and control the games."

Cameroon coach Jean Rene Akono Bekono: "This was a very difficult match against a really good team. The Netherlands is one of the best in the world. We didn’t have enough time to prepare for this match. At last year’s World Championship, we had more time to prepare and had better results, but today wasn’t so good. Today, the Netherlands played at a very high level. We have to improve day by day, but it takes time."

Cameroon captain Nana Christelle Tchoudjang: "It’s the first experience like this, the World Cup, for me and playing against high-level teams. We want to improve ourselves day by day and I would like to experience a tournament like this again. Today, my condition was not so good, so we decided I wouldn’t play today."
