Drews sparks USA in victory over Dominican Republic

Sapporo, Japan, September 24, 2019 – Annie Drews scored a match-high 23 points as the United States downed the Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-9) at the FIVB Women’s World Cup on Tuesday.

USA coach Karch Kiraly coach: "The Dominican Republic has been playing better in recent competitions. They played better in the Volleyball Nations League and the Tokyo Volleyball Qualification Tournament. They have a chance to make the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. I’m happy that we responded to a disappointing loss with good volleyball. We look forward to playing Russia next.

"Andrea Drews has had a strong 2019 season. She is a good learner and is working hard to become an elite level international opposite."

USA captain Jordan Larson: "We knew it would be tough today after the tough loss last night. I’m glad we came out stronger today. We knew the Dominican Republic would be a challenge. We took some time to digest the loss last night and then focused on today. There are still lots of matches left in the tournament."

Dominican Republic coach Marcos Kwiek: "We are in the same region as the USA and the Dominican Republic have played many times, so we know them well. We had good concentration in the first and second sets. Our service was not good in the third set and the USA served well, and we ended up with this result."

Dominican Republic player Dharlenis Marte: "We are not happy with today’s result. It was a difficult match against a good team. We lacked a good attitude today. It wasn’t our best day."
