Peru eye second round in Aguascalientes

 

Leon, Mexico, July 12, 2019 - Peru persevered to a 3-2 (29-27, 18-25, 25-19, 20-25, 19-17) victory over China in the first match of Pool B at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship in Leon, Mexico. 


Pool B

Peru claimed a 3-2 (29-27, 18-25, 25-20, 20-25, 19-17) win in 2 hours and 20 minutes over China in the first match of the day. Ariana Arciniega and Kiara Montes led Team Peru, each scored a total of 19 and 20 points respectively, on 17 kills apiece. For China, Xu Lujao with 27 points and Wang Yizhu with 25 points were the best scorers of the day in Leon.

Poland had a big 42-19 margin in attacks that was key in their 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-11) victory over Egypt in pool B. Julia Orzol with 15 points topped the charts followed by Weronika Cenlka and Zuzanna Gorecka with 12 each. Elelemy Zeina was the best scorer for Egypt with 6 points.
 
 

Pool C

Russia, the European runners-up, defeated a fierce Serbia 3-1 (25-21, 30-28, 21-25, 25-22) that fought till the end of the match. Ekaterina Pipunyrova was the best scorer for Russia with 18 points. Serbia was led by their captain Jovana Mirosavljevic with 20 points.


With 22 points, Derya Cabecioglu led Turkey to the victory 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7) over Argentina. With 15 spikes, 3 blocks and 2 aces, Sol Candelas led the South American team. More than 2 hours of a very tough game for both teams was the icing on the cake for the first day of the Women’s U20 World Championship.
