Kovac and Slovenia part ways

Ljubljana, Slovenia, January 25, 2019 - It will be an important year for Slovenian volleyball. With the men's and women's teams competing at the European Championships and the men's team at an Olympic Qualification Tournament, there will be a lot at stake for one of European volleyball's superpowers.

The former European vice-champions, however, will be looking for a new coach after parting ways with Serbian mentor Slobodan Kovac. "We would like to thank Slobodan for all that he did for Slovenian volleyball and the Slovenian national team in the past two seasons. He led our team towards the victory in the second group of the FIVB Volleyball World League two years ago, and Slovenia's first ever World Championship appearance. But the decision taken unanimously by both sides is to part ways," said Volleyball Federation of Slovenia President Metod Ropret.

Kovac succeeded Italian Andrea Giani as the Slovenian men's team head coach and made his debut appearance on the Slovenian bench at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship qualification tournament held in May 2017 in Ljubljana. Under his guidance the Slovenians claimed an eighth place at the 2017 EuroVolley in Poland and twelfth place at the 2018 World Championship in Italy and  Bulgaria.
