Defending world champions VakifBank Istanbul will be going for their fourth world title this year in the 2019 FIVB Club World Championship, after back-to-back successes in 2017 and 2018 - adding to their first title in 2013.
This is VakifBank's sixth appearance in the competition. In addition to their three gold medals, they also boast a silver in their debut in 2011 and a bronze in 2016.
Last year in the final of the Club World Championship VanifBank beat Minas Tenis Clube of Belo Horizonte in straight sets - also a competitor in this year's event.
The club, founded in 1986 as Gunes Sigorta Sports Club in Istanbul and later merging with VakifBank Sports Club in Ankara to take its current form, has amassed four European Champions League titles (2011, 2013, 2017 and 2018) in addition to four silver and one bronze in Europe's flagship club event.
At domestic level VakifBank hold a record eleven national championship titles, including the latest, earlier this year, when they edged cross-town rivals Eczacibasi in the best-of-five final series with 3-2 wins.
VakifBank have made it into the Guinness Book of World Records with a winning streak of 73 matches across all competitions from 23 October 2012 to 22 January 2014 when it was brought to an end by crosstown rivals Fenerbahce Istanbul.
