Zadar, Croatia
Zadar is a historic Croatian city, tracing its roots back to the Stone Age. It was first established as a proper city by the Romans, but throughout its long history has also been under Byzantine, Venetian, Hungarian, Turkish, Austrian, French and Italian rule.
Situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, Zadar is nowadays a major historical, cultural and tourism centre, with its fortified city a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zadar features numerous buildings and monuments of great historical significance, including Roman remains, a medieval citadel, public buildings and a number of churches.
The population of Zadar is 75,000, making it the fifth largest in the country and second largest in Dalmatia.
