Team Poland celebrate in front of their home crowd. The VNL started well for the world champions.
Katowice, Poland, May 31, 2019 - Pool 3 hosts Poland started their VNL campaign with a 3-1 victory against Australia and already have their sights on the next and possibly much tougher opponent - the USA.
Poland coach Vital Heynen: "It was a really good atmosphere here, it's great to play in Katowice, so many people come to see the game. We won, we could see where we are. The game was like I expected. There were good things and some not-so-good things. The guys were standing for the first time on the court together in an official game, so the feeling was not always smooth. I find it a normal game. We have to learn every day. We gave away the second set, we made 15 errors in that part and it's not my idea of volleyball - to give so many points directly to opponent. We have to get better and use every opportunity well."
Poland player Paweł Zatorski: "Vital knows what he's doing. Each player is going to get his time to rest after a tough club season. And we really need that rest. Tomorrow and the day after we will face much stronger opponents. Even though USA is playing in a bit of an experimental squad, we are ready for a big fight - this is the key to winning that match."
Australia coach Mark Lebedew: "It was an important game for us. To play Poland in Poland means there's nothing to lose, it was a chance for us to start the season and see where we are, what our level is. Actually, we didn't learn anything new, we knew that we can play at a high level - we did it for one set and for parts of other sets. We have to start the game better and we have to keep that level for a little bit longer. It's a big job for my guys. Some of them have never played in the top leagues, so it's a big jump to come and play here. We needed that lesson. I enjoyed the atmosphere in Spodek, it's great to play here."
