Novi Sad, Serbia, May 31, 2019 - France defeated Russia 3-1 on day one of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Novi Sad on Friday.

Laurent Tillie, head coach of France: "I asked my players to play with their heart, because we were not so good physically and we lacked some coordination between the players. But it is true that we fought well, we defended well, covered the field nicely, so it was pretty much ok overall."

Tuomas Sammelvuo, head coach of Russia: "There were a lot of emotions, for sure, but I think we played with the handbrake on today, and I think the more we play the better we will get. France played technically, not always with power, but we had problems siding out our game. And we played better after the second set, but overall we had many mixed feelings in this match, and as I said earlier, I think we could have played more."

Antoine Brizard, team captain of France: "It was a tough game, and we are satisfied with the victory. But there is still a lot to do, we have to improve our game, for sure. Russia pushed hard with aggressive serving and powerful block, but we played smart, I think, and it paid off in the end. Overall, it was a decent match."

Dmitry Volkov, team captain of Russia: "New coach - new vision: we need to get to know each other better so I think we will improve progressively."
