Irina Koroleva is set to captain Sbornaya at the tournament in Kaliningrad
Kaliningrad, Russia, August 26, 2020 – The women’s national team of Russia is about to appear in action for the first time in 2020, as they take on Superliga medallists Dinamo-Ak Bars Kazan, Lokomotiv Kaliningrad and Uralochka-NTMK Ekaterinburg at a much anticipated invitational tournament from Thursday through Saturday.
The Kaliningrad Oblast Governer’s Cup will take place in a single round-robin format at the Yantarny sports palace in the Russian Baltic exclave. Spectators will be allowed to attend at 10% of the competition hall’s seating capacity.
The bronze medallists of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball World Cup are set to start off against the bronze medallists of the 2020 Russian Superliga, Uralochka-NTMK Ekaterinburg, on August 27. The national champions and cup winners, playing under their new name of Dinamo-Ak Bars Kazan, are Sbornaya’s next opponent. On the last competition day on Saturday, Russia will face hosts Lokomotiv Kaliningrad, Superliga silver medallists and Super Cup laureates.
The national team has been preparing for the event at a 10-day training camp in Kaliningrad. Russia’s Italian head coach Sergio Busato will rely on the services of 17 players, with two of the big stars, setter and captain Evgeniya Startseva and opposite Nataliya Goncharova, missing for medical reasons:

“It was in Kaliningrad that we booked our tickets to Tokyo 2020, so we feel at home here,” coach Busato said. “I would like to thank the Russian federation and the Lokomotiv volleyball club for organising this tournament and to all clubs who understood well that we need our preparations as well and allowed their international players to join our team. Despite all the uncertainties, we must fine-tune our game, we must be ready...”
