Eda Erdem: Captain of all trades

Captain at Istanbul's Fenerbahce, captain of Turkey's national team (and also captain at sea), iconic middle blocker Eda Erdem showcases her leadership talents every chance she gets.

The 33-year-old has surprisingly hardly moved around a lot. Her club career features just four years at Besiktas Istanbul, before she moved cross-town to Fenerbahce in 2008 and has been there ever since.

After playing a pivotal role early last year in helping Turkey punch their ticket for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and making the qualification tournament Dream Team for her efforts, Erdem is now looking at being named an Olympian for the second time (after her appearance in Turkey's only other Olympic participation at London 2012).

She was obviously disappointed when the Tokyo Olympics were postponed and rescheduled for 2021, but she's been optimistic since the very start of the uncertain times earlier this year: "We will eventually meet one day," was her intial reaction.

And Erdem has not been idle since, bringing on her leadership talents to support those most vulnerable during these unprecedented times and taking the time to participate in the United Nations' International Day of the Girl Child programme.

"A girl who discovers her self-worth and self-esteem can fearlessly chase her dreams," said Erdem. "During the epidemic, we should be with and support girls so that they are not deprived of education and development."
