Antonov signs on with Piacenza

Rome, Italy, June 12, 2020 – Oleg Antonov will return to Italy’s SuperLega in time for the start of the 2020-21 season after signing with Gas Sales Piacenza.

The Italy international is one of the key players in Gianlorenzo Blengini’s team and he will be pushing for a place when the Azzurri chase a third consecutive Olympic medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The 31-year-old made his Italy debut in the 2015 FIVB Volleyball World League and he went on to be part of the team that won silver at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games and bronze at the 2015 European Championship.

His signing comes shortly after fellow Italy international Alessandro Fei retired as a player for Piacenza and took over as team manager.

“Antonov is a great player and we are very pleased to have him with us next season,” Piacenza vice-president Giuseppe Bongiorni said. “He has character, great technique and has built a huge amount of experience in his career.

“This great mix will help us massively and I am convinced he will bring a huge contribution to our team.”

Antonov was born in Moscow in 1988 and had a quick introduction to volleyball as his father Yaroslav Antonov was part of the Soviet Union team that won silver at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.

Antonov senior joined Brescia in 1991 and it was in Italy that his son took his first steps in volleyball. He joined Trentino in 2006 and made his Serie A debut aged 17.

He later joined Cuneo before he continued his adventures in France with Tours where he won the French league, French Cup and French Super Cup in 2014.

Antonov returned to Italy and played for Trento and Vibo Valentia before he continued his globe-trotting by signing with Ziraat Bankasi Ankara in Turkey. He also played for Ural Ufa in Russia and Galatasaray in Turkey.
