Sylla sets sights on success with club and country

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 27, 2019 – Miriam Sylla was a key player for Italy and received one of the tournament's individual awards as an outside hitter as her country claimed silver at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in Japan in October. In this interview, the 24-year-old talks to fivb.com about the tournament and her hopes for the future. She also discusses playing for one of Europe's top clubs, Imoco Volley.

How do you feel about your team’s performance at the World Championship?

Miriam Sylla: I am proud of what we did because after so many years, we were able to put Italy back as one of the top teams. We had an incredible experience in Japan and we wouldn’t change anything about that experience. We were all very happy!

What would you want to improve in this season and for seasons to come?
Miriam Sylla: I want to try to be a better player and give my best every day, and win a lot of trophies with my team.

Who are your closest friends in the national team?
Miriam Sylla: Paola Egonu is my closest friend in the national team, we’ve been great friends and we support each other a lot. I have a great relationship with Moki (De Gennaro), Lia (Malinov) and Cristina (Chirichella).

How is your club season going so far?
Miriam Sylla: The season is going well. We won the Italian Supercup and we played in the Italian Cup final. I think we can do even better than our performance in that tournament and soon we will have the busiest period of our season in Italy and Europe.

Are there any players you look up to?
Miriam Sylla: Honestly, I really cannot choose. I admire a lot of players and I like them a lot.

If you were to create your own Dream Team, who are the six players - past or present - you would like to play with?
Miriam Sylla: My Dream Team would be composed of the following:

Outside Spiker (1): Zhu Ting

Setter (1): Joanna Wolosz

Middle Blockers (2): Raphaela Folie and Anna Danesi

Opposite (1): Paola Egonu

Libero (1): Monica De Gennaro

What are your expectations for the next edition of the Volleyball Nations League?
Miriam Sylla: I hope that our team will be able to sustain its momentum and level to win a gold medal this year.

For my part, my fans can expect grit and desire to fight and a lot of fun in play.
