Ruse in volleyball fever ahead of the women’s VNL

Ruse, Bulgaria, May 19, 2019 - Two days before the start of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, Ruse is ready for the debut of the Bulgarian national team in the competition. The city on the banks of the Danube River will host Pool 2 where the local favourites will face Japan, Belgium and Brazil. On Sunday, volleyball fans and children from local schools and kindergartens honoured the players in front of the Statue of Freedom in the centre of the city.

For two of the players it was a double celebration. Team captain Lora Kitipova turned 28 while opposite spiker Silvana Chausheva celebrated her 24th birthday. Both of them received presents and flower bouquets from the deputy mayor of Ruse, Dimitar Nakov.

“We’ll do our best in the VNL. The expectations are high but we are well prepared and I think success will come,” said birthday girl Chausheva.

Sunday marked the first day of training in full strength for the Lionesses. Both captain Kitipova and wing spiker Mariya Karakasheva have just joined the team after winning the league title in Romania with CSM Volei Alba Blaj.

Bulgaria opens its Volleyball Nations League campaign on Tuesday against Japan.
