Gabi spurs on Brazil in sweep of China

Brasilia, Brazil, May 22, 2019 - Gabriela 'Gabi' Guimaraes had a field day as she captained Brazil to a thundering opening in the 2019 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League with an undisputable 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-21) sweep of China.

The 24-year-old outside hitter attacked (18/32 for 56%), received and even produced some fancy defensive footwork, while setter Macris Carneiro entertained the 6,000-strong crowd with her inspired distribution of the play.

All China could do was save two match points before Gabi herself attacked down the line from the right to bring it home.

Gabi, who top-scored in the game with 20 points, led a relatively fresh team fielded by coach Jose 'Ze Roberto' Guimaraes, full of players who all seemed eager to prove themselves and secure permanent spots in Brazil's national team.

Playmaker Macris Carneiro entertained the crowd in Brasilia with inspired distribution of play.

Opposite Paula added another 15 points for the home side, with Liu Yanhan, who came on off the bench in the first set, emerging as China's best scorer on 11.
