Smarzek bags 32, breaks 400-mark as Poland bow out of VNL

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 4, 2019 - Malwina Smarzek said farewell to the 2019 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League with yet another high-scoring performance of 32 points against Brazil on the second day of the Final Six tournament in Nanjing, though this proved not enough to keep Poland in the tournament as they suffered their second loss and were eliminated.

This brings Smarzek's tournament total to 420 points from 17 matches. She is the only player to have broken the 400-mark in the VNL and has shattered her own record from last year of 'just' 361 points in 15 matches.

Of the players continuing in the competition, Brazil's Gabriela 'Gabi' Guimaraes is second in the list of scorers, but at 250 only just over half of Smarzek's performance.

The 23-year-old Polish opposite scored all her 32 points from attacks (32/62 for a 52% efficiency) in her team's 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 15-10) defeat on Thursday.

It is Smarzek's seventh 30+ scoring performance so far in this year's VNL, including an all-time VNL high of 42. Including three 30+ performance from last season, she appears 10 times in the list of players to have scored 30 points or more in a single VNL match.

Thursday's performance is the first in this year's Final Six. In last year's Final Six, also in Nanjing, only Serbia's Tijana Boskovic made the list, when she scored 31 points against Turkey.
