Egonu gets 38 in fourth-best all-time VNL scoring feat

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 5, 2019 - Paola Egonu lived up to her scoring reputation with 38 points against China as pool play wound up in the Final Six of the 2019 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League Friday in Nanjing, but it was not good enough to keep Italy alive in the competition, as they succumbed to hosts China 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) and crashed out.

Egonu collected 32 points from attacks (32/66 for 48%), got in four blocks and served two aces Friday.

It was the fourth entry for the 20-year-old opposite in the list of players to have scored 30 points or more in a single VNL match following 40 points also against China earlier in the competition and 32 against Serbia, in addition to 32 scored last year against Japan.

Her Friday entry comes in at No. 4, below the all-time best of 42 and another of 39 by Poland's Malwina Smarzek against Bulgaria and Thailand and her own 40 against China.

It comes just a few hours after USA's Jordan Thompson became the first American to make the list after scoring 33 points against Brazil in Nanjing earlier on Friday.
