Egonu batters Zhu in scoring head-to-head, but Italy fall to China

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 6, 2019 - Paola Egonu bagged 40 points Thursday for Italy against China in the second-highest scoring performance in the history of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League - but still it was not enough to push her side to victory as China rallied from two sets down to take the game 3-2 (18-25, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-13).

On the opposite side of the net, Zhu Ting, China's traditionally high scorer, managed 'just' 26 points.

Egonu had 30 kills from 59 swings (51%), plus 4 blocks and 6 aces.

It was Egonu's second entry this year in the list of players to have scored 30 points or more in the VNL, after her 32-point performance against Serbia earlier this season.

The 20-year-old opposite also has an entry from last year.

Only Poland's Malwina Smarzek has scored more points in a single VNL match, 41 last week against Bulgaria.
