Shlyapnikov to lead Russia training programme

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 15, 2019 - Sergey Shlyapnikov is taking charge of Russia's long-term programme leading up to the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship which they will host at home, the All-Russia Volleyball Federation has announced.

The 57-year-old coach led Russia to triumph at the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League last year, after sailing through the final round undefeated and beating France 3-0 in the final in Lille.

But according to the decision of the Russian Federation he will now be moving from the position of head coach of the national team to lead the training programme in preparation for the 2022 World Championship. He will be engaged in organizational work and will develop a monumental programme for the development of volleyball, which will include many aspects of training, both at youth and senior levels as well as professional teams.

Shlyapnikov has previously led Russian U19 (in 1999) and U21 (in 2001) teams to FIVB World Championship titles, as well as numerous successes in continental and other events.

A list of candidates to replace Shlyapnikov as head coach of Russia's national team is expected to be presented to the Presidium of the Russian Federation by the beginning of next month.
