Ottawa, Canada, November 21, 2018 - Volleyball Canada has announced that long-time Team Canada men’s coach Glenn Hoag will return as head coach of their senior programme in 2019.
Hoag, who led Canada's men’s team to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and was a member of the 1984 Olympic team as a player, has spent the time since 2016 coaching professionally in Turkey, and serving as a coach/advisor to all Volleyball Canada’s men’s high performance programmes.

Hoag has agreed to return and guide the senior men’s team through the Olympic period, with the first qualifier being held in August 2019. This comes after the recent departure of Stephane Antiga, who resigned due to family obligations.
"I have a strong connection to the men’s team, and I’m looking forward to building on the progress made since 2016 under Stephane’s direction," said Hoag. "The next two years are crucial and will require a lot of work, but I have confidence in the staff, including assistant coach Dan Lewis, and the players that we are all focused on the goal of qualification and strong performances on the world stage."
The men’s team finished third in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League, seventh in the 2018 Volleyball Nations League (which will return to Ottawa next June) and ninth in the recent FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
Canada ended their 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championship campaign with a victory against co-hosts Bulgaria.
"Glenn has successfully worked with the program as a coach since 2006 and resuming duties as head coach will ensure continuity until Tokyo 2020," said Julien Boucher, Volleyball Canada’s indoor high performance director. "The next 18 months will be an exciting time for the men’s programme."
Hoag began his coaching career in 1993 with the University of Sherbrooke, and then, while still at Sherbrooke, he started coaching at Paris Volley in France. His highlight during his tenure in Paris was in 2001 when the team won the French Cup, the French Championship and the European Champions Cup.
Glenn was also an assistant coach for the French National Team from 2001-2004, and coached the ACH Team in Slovenia from 2008-2010 winning the Slovenian Championship, the Slovenian Cup and MEVZA in both 2008 and 2010. He coaches the Arkas Sports Club in the Turkish city of Izmir, winners of the Turkish Cup in 2011 and the Turkish Championship in 2011, 2013 and 2015.
In 2016, Hoag was awarded the Geoff Gowan Award by the Coaching Association of Canada in recognition of a lifetime contribution to coaching development. He is also a member of the Volleyball Quebec and Volleyball Canada Halls of Fame.
