Get to know: USA middle blocker David Smith

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 29, 2019 – David Smith may have reached the stage of his career where he is regarded as the team’s ‘father’, but the 34-year-old could be a key figure as the USA attempt to improve on the bronze medal they won in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. 

John Speraw’s team beat Brazil 3-0 in the bronze medal match and Smith, a middle blocker, weighed in with eight points and three blocks. 

Smith was born with mild-to-severe hearing loss that means he wears hearing aids and lip reads during matches. He has enjoyed the past few years and the VNL bronze meant he’s won three major medals in four years after bronze at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games and the Italy-Bulgaria 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
