Hugo Gaspar was born in Marinha Grande in 1983, and started to play volleyball when he was 14 years old. His first club was SO Marinhense, where he played for 2 seasons, followed by 5 years in Esmoriz GC. In 2004 he travelled to Italy where he played for Sisley Treviso in an excellent year where the team won the Italian Championship, the Italian Cup and Super Cup. Returning to Portugal the following year, he then played in Vitoria SC (where he won also the Portuguese championship and Portuguese Cup) and Castelo da Maia GC. In 2010 he transferred to SL Benfica with whom he won 5 National Championship, 7 Super Cup and 6 Portuguese Cup. The 200-cm wingspiker is already a veteran in the high level competition, both in the clubs and national team. Disciplined and studious, he was able to conciliate his Medicine studies and high-level sport. In the national team the best results achieved were the 8th place in the World Championship in 2002, the 5th place in the 2005 World League and the 10th place in the 2005 European Championships. He comes back in 2016 to play the World League Group, in which Portugal organized the finals and finished in 2nd place after the final match with Canada.
