Germany have two appearance at the Olympic Games, with a 9th place in Beijing 2008 and a 5th in London 2012. Before reunification former East Germany had finished 4th in Mexico City 1968 followed by the silver medal in Munich 1972. Former East Germany were also crowned world champions in 1969 and clinched the FIVB World Cup a year later. Since reunification Germany twice reached the medals round at the European Championship.
Germany had one of the most successful periods in their history earlier this decade, finishing fifth in the London 2012 Olympic Games and reaching the final round of the FIVB World League for the first time in 2012 – also placing fifth – before capturing bronze at the 2014 FIVB World Championship. But after missing the 2015 season of the World League (to focus on the European Games where they won gold in Baku), when they rejoined the competition in 2016 they were in Group 3.
Last year Germany finished 9th in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League on a 7-8 record, but had previoulsy failed to advance to the 2018 FIVB World Championship through the European qualifiers.
