Smarzek merciless in Poland’s crush of Argentina

Bydgoszcz, Poland, June 5, 2018 – Poland mastered a routine 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-20) victory over Argentina in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League with a merciless Malwina Smarzek firing away as many as 20 points towards her team’s success.

Smarzek led the scorers’ charts posting one ace, 14 successful spikes and five stuff blocks.

Natalia Medrzyk fed Poland’s tally with another 10 points to become the only other player on double digits in this speedy 66-minute match.

Argentina’s most prolific player, Antonela Fortuna, finished with eight points.

It was a one-sided clash throughout and at no particular moment did the Argentine squad pose any threat to the Polish superiority, enjoyed by the almost two thousand Polish fans on the stands at the Luczniczka hall in Bydgoszcz. While Argentina are still winless since the start of the inaugural VNL, for Poland this is the fourth victory in 10 matches played.

Malwina Smarzek made a tremendous start at the beginning of the first set, scoring seven of her squad’s first 11 points. With two slamming back row spikes and a sizzling ace in between for 10-4, she set the tone for the rest of the match and reinforced it with another hammer from the back court at 88.7 km/h for 11-5.

Argentina’s performance was highlighted by a few impressive pipe shots from Anahi Florencia Tosi, but not enough to challenge the Polish domination. Starting with a total of eight points in the first set, Smarzek may have “slowed” down a little bit to six each in the next two, but it was more than enough to cruise to a comfortable victory.
