Serbia need win over Turkey in Balkan derby to stay amongst VNL leaders

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 30, 2018 - Serbia look to extend their 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League record to 8-1 Thursday in Kraljevo, when they host Turkey who already dropped to 6-2 thus far after losing to Russia on Wednesday. The Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists lead the series in the Balkan derby 10-6.

Head-to-Head
• Serbia (including Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro) have won five matches against Turkey at world level major tournaments, and lost four.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• Four of Serbia's five wins came in their last four encounters, including a 3-0 win at the 2017 World Grand Prix.
• Turkey's last win at world level was a 3-2 victory at the 2014 World Grand Prix.
• At the European Championships, Serbia (and predecessors) have won five of the seven encounters with Turkey, including each of the last three.

Turkey
• Despite a 2-1 lead in sets, Turkey lost to Russia on Wednesday. Their 2018 VNL record now is six wins and two defeats. The other defeat was a 3-1 against Brazil on 22 May.
• Turkey could now lose back-to-back world level major competition matches for the first time since six straight at the 2017 World Grand Prix.
• In each of the last 14 world level major competition matches involving Turkey, the team that won the first set, eventually won the match.
• Eda Erdem Dundar (16 points) and Meliha Ismailoglu (14) reached double figures for Turkey on Wednesday against Russia. No less than 11 Turkish players managed to score in that five-setter.

Serbia
• Serbia have won seven matches and lost one in the 2018 VNL. Their only defeat was a 3-1 against Brazil on 17 May.
• Serbia have won five straight world level major competition matches. They could make it six for the first time since their last four matches at the 2016 World Grand Prix followed by their first two at the 2016 Olympic Games.
• Serbia have now won five of their eight world level major competition matches on home soil. Their last four wins in front of a home crowd came in straight sets.
• Brankica Mihajlovic (16), Bojana Milenkovic (13) and Stefana Veljkovic (10) reached double figures in scoring against Belgium on Wednesday (3-0 win).
