Serbia eye return to victories over Thailand

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 19, 2018 - After losing to Brazil in their last match of the opening week of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, reigning European champions Serbia are looking at returning to victories when they face Thailand on Tuesday in Macau. The Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists are on a two-match winning streak head-to-head against Thailand, but the overall series is tight at 4-3 in favour of Serbia.

Head-to-Head
• Serbia have won four of their previous seven meetings with Thailand at major world level tournaments, including the last two.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• Two of Thailand's three wins versus Serbia came in five sets, including their last victory, at the 2015 World Grand Prix.
• Their most recent meeting at world level came at last year's World Grand Prix. Serbia won 3-1.

Thailand
• Thailand claimed their first VNL win in their third match last week: 3-0 versus Argentina.
• Thailand could win successive major world level matches for the second time in the last four years. They won their last two fixtures of last year's World Grand Prix, 3-0 against both Turkey and Italy.
• All of Thailand's last four victories at major world level tournaments came in straight sets.
• Pimpichaya Kokram and Ajcharaporn Kongyot have both scored a team-high 35 points for Thailand at the VNL.
• Kongyot and Chatchu-On Moksri both claimed three points from serves for Thailand against Argentina.

Serbia
• Serbia have lost their last VNL match 3-1 against Brazil, after opening the tournament with two straight-sets victories.
• Serbia have not lost successive matches at major world level since opening the 2016 World Grand Prix with three straight defeats.
• Four of Serbia's last five losses at major world level came despite winning the first set: two against Brazil and two versus AVC sides Japan and China.
• Jovana Stevanovic has scored a team-high 16 points from blocks in Serbia's first three matches at the VNL.
