Poland look for first win over Germany in eight years

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 5, 2018 - Poland have won their last two matches, Germany their last three, as the two sides go head-to-head Wednesday in Bydgoszcz for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. Poland lead German teams 7-2 in their series at world level, but they haven't beaten Germany in eight years, since the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix.

Head-to-Head
• Poland have won seven of their nine world level major tournament matches against (East/West) Germany.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• East Germany beat Poland 3-1 in Paris at the 1956 World Championships.
• The most recent world level major tournament match between Poland and Germany came in the 2013 World Grand Prix. The Germans won in straight sets in Plock.
• Poland's most recent world level major tournament win versus Germany was a 3-1 victory in Okayama in the 2010 World Grand Prix.
• At the 2017 European Championship, Poland beat Germany in five sets in Baku.

• Poland have won four of their 10 VNL matches, but two of those victories came in their last two fixtures: 3-0 wins against Korea and Argentina.
• Poland could win three consecutive world level major tournament matches in straight sets for the first time since their opening three fixtures of the 2017 World Grand Prix.
• Poland have lost each of their last three world level major competition matches against European opposition. They had won five consecutive world level major tournament fixtures versus European teams prior to this losing run.
• Malwina Smarzek scored a match-high 20 points in the 3-0 victory against Argentina on Tuesday. In total, she has now scored 234 points in the VNL, most of all players coming into the 11th matchround.

Germany
• Germany have won three consecutive VNL matches, after following a win in their opening fixture of the tournament with six defeats in a row.
• Germany could win four consecutive world level major tournament matches for the first time since a run of eight in a row in the 2017 World Grand Prix.
• Louisa Lippmann scored 28 points in the 3-1 win against Belgium on Tuesday, at least twice as many as any other German player (Maren Fromm next 14).
• In total, Lippmann has scored 204 points in the VNL. Only Poland's Malwina Smarzek has scored more (234).
