France go for fourth VNL win against Argentina

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 8, 2018 - France host Argentina Saturday in Aix-en-Provence, seeking their fourth win in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. The European side, who as hosts of the finals in Lille next month are assured of qualifying, lead their head-to-head with the South Americans 16-12, including eight wins in the last ten encounters.

Head-to-Head
• France have won 16 of their 28 matches against Argentina in world level major competitions.
• World level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World League and Grand Champions Cup.
• France have won eight of their last 10 world level major fixtures against Argentina, with the exceptions of 3-2 defeats at the 2014 and 2016 World League.
• At the 2015 World League, France defeated Argentina 3-0 in the semifinals and went on to win their first World League title.
• France defeated Argentina 3-0 in the group stage at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. Eventually Argentina claimed bronze, their only Olympic medal, while France finished eighth.

France
• France recorded a win in straight sets against Korea in their last game at the VNL. It was their third 3-0 win in the tournament.
• The last time France won back-to-back matches in a major world level competition in straight sets came in the 2017 World League versus Canada and Belgium.
• In total, France recorded four straight set wins in the 2017 World League.
• France have won 16 of their last 17 matches on home soil in major world level competitions, including the last seven.

Argentina
• Argentina lost their last match 3-1 against Serbia to record their sixth loss in seven VNL matches.
• In the 2017 World League, Argentina also lost six of their first seven but went on to win both the eighth and the ninth match of the tournament.
• Argentina won their first set against Serbia. They have now won the first set in five of their seven VNL matches.
• Cristian Poglajen and Facundo Conte both scored a team-high 15 points against Serbia.
