Lausanne, Switzerland, June 23, 2018 - Canada can level their head-to-head record against Japan which currently stands at 7-6 for the Asians, when the two sides meet Sunday in Jiangmen on the closing day of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League.
Head-to-Head
• Japan and Canada have met 13 times in world level major tournaments, with Japan winning seven and Canada six.
• World level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World League and Grand Champions Cup.
• These teams have not played each other in world level major tournaments since the 2015 World Cup, when Japan won 3-0.
• Japan have not won back-to-back matches against Canada in straight sets.
• Canada's last two wins came at the 2013 World League.
Japan
• Japan lost 3-1 to Serbia on Saturday, their second successive defeat at the VNL.
• Japan have conceded at least two sets in each of their last 11 matches in the VNL since a 3-1 win against Iran in the opening week.
• Japan have claimed four of their six VNL wins in five sets. They could win five five-setters at a single major world level tournament for the first time. They also had four at the 1966 World Championship and 1993 World League.
• Issei Otake (19), Tatsuya Fukuzawa (18) and Masahiro Yanagida (17) led Japan in terms of scoring against Serbia. No other player reached double figures for Japan.
Canada
• Canada ended a three-match losing streak at the VNL with a 3-0 win against China on Saturday.
• Canada could record successive straight-sets victories at major world level for the first time since a run of three spanning the 2016 World League and Olympic Games.
• Canada could win at least five matches by a 3-0 scoreline at a major world level tournament for the second time after the 2016 World League (7).
• Stephen Timothy Maar was Canada's leading points scorer against China, on 16 points. Arthur Szwarc (11) also scored 10+ points.
• Arthur Szwarc scored four of Canada's seven points from stuff blocks against China.
