Brazil to defend 16-year winning streak over Germany

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 11, 2018 - Brazil have not lost to Germany since the 2002 FIVB World Grand Prix and look to extend this streak when they host the European side in the opening match of Pool 4 of the 2018 Volleyball Nations League at Barueri.

Head-to-Head
• Brazil have won their last 15 major world level encounters with Germany, since a 3-1 defeat in the final for third place at the 2002 World Grand Prix.
• World level major competitions are: Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• At the 2002 World Grand Prix, Germany won four successive matches against Brazil. These are Germany's only victories over Brazil at world level major competitions since the reunification of Germany.
• Brazil are unbeaten in all six major world level matches against (East/West) Germany played on home soil.
• Their last major world level meeting came at the 2015 World Grand Prix where Brazil beat Germany in straight sets in the preliminary round.

Brazil
• Brazil have won three of the major competitions at world level: two gold medals at the Olympic Games (2008, 2012), a record 12 titles at the World Grand Prix (including last two) and two trophies at the Grand Champions Cup.
• Brazil have finished on the podium in 10 of their last 11 participations in a world level major competition (2012-2017), with a fifth place at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games as the only exception.
• Brazil are currently ranked fourth on the women's world ranking.
• Brazil have lost only one of their last 21 major world level fixtures on home soil: a 3-2 loss versus China in the quarterfinals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
• The last time Brazil lost to a European side in front of a home crowd was at the 2010 World Grand Prix, where they lost 3-1 to Italy in the preliminary round.

Germany
• Germany have yet to win a world level major competition. They claimed second place at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games (as East Germany) and third place at both the 2002 and 2009 World Grand Prix.
• Their podium at the 2002 World Grand Prix came after beating Brazil 3-1 in the final for third place.
• Germany are currently ranked 13th in the world among women's teams.
• At the 2017 World Grand Prix, Germany finished second in Group 2 behind Korea after the intercontinental round.
• Germany have won six of their last 10 major world level matches against South American opposition. Their defeats came against Brazil (3 times) and Argentina (1).
• Germany have won only two of their last 15 five-setters at world level major competitions: against Dominican Republic at the 2012 World Grand Prix and versus Bulgaria at the 2017 World Grand Prix.
