Argentina, Dominican Republic clash for first VNL win

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 19, 2018 - Argentina and the Dominican Republic are two of the three winless teams (alongside Italy) after the opening week of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League - but something has to give Tuesday in Ankara when they come head-to-head. The 'Queens of the Caribbean' lead the series 5-2 and have not lost to Argentina since 2011.

Head-to-Head
• The Dominican Republic have won five of their previous seven major world level encounters with Argentina, including each of the last three.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• Argentina's two victories against the Dominican Republic both came in 2011: 3-2 at the World Grand Prix and 3-1 at the World Cup.
• Argentina only once won the opening set in their seven world level fixtures versus the Dominican Republic, in a 3-2 defeat in their most recent meeting, at the 2016 World Grand Prix.
• At major world level, the Dominican Republic have only won more matches against Poland (8), Thailand (6) and Germany (6, including its predecessors) than versus Argentina (5).

Argentina
• Argentina lost all three matches in the opening week of the VNL, despite winning the opening set in two of those fixtures.
• In their last participation at a major world level tournament, at last year's World Grand Prix, Argentina lost six matches before recording their first victory.
• Argentina have lost their last four fixtures at major world level, since a 3-0 win against NORCECA side Puerto Rico at last year's World Grand Prix.
• Julieta Constanza Lazcano led her team in terms of scoring in Argentina's last VNL match. She scored nine points against Thailand of which three from blocks.
• Anahi Florencia Tosi was Argentina's leading scorer in their first two fixtures this campaign: 18 points against Russia and 11 versus Netherlands.

Dominican Republic
• The Dominican Republic recorded three defeats in the first week of the VNL.
• The last time the Dominican Republic lost their first four fixtures at a major world level tournament was at the 2015 World Grand Prix (then all 9).
• The Dominican Republic have lost their last five major world level fixtures, since a 3-2 win over Thailand at last year's World Grand Prix.
• The Dominican Republic's last two defeats at major world level both came in five sets. They had won five of their six deciders before this run.
• Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez and Jeoselyna Rodriguez Santos both scored a team-high 15 points in the Dominican Republic's last match.
• Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez was the Dominican Republic's leading scorer in their first two VNL matches: 12 points against China and 31 versus Republic of Korea.
