Paola Egonu rattled yet another opponent on Christmas Eve, powering defending champions Imoco Volley Conegliano to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 28-26) shutout of Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio at the PalaVerde, as the Italian Women's League continued.
The win keeps Conegliano's season record intact on full points after 14 matches and sees the side eight points clear at the top of the standings.
Egonu powered off 17 kills from 31 swings for 55% in attack and added 3 aces and 2 blocks for a match high total of 22 points. The only other player from either side to score in double digits was her teammate Miriam Sylla with 13, who was named MVP of the match.
With coach Daniele Santarelli bringing on a few subs by the third set (with Bozana Butigan for Robin de Kruijf in the middle and Loveth Omoruyi for Kim Hill on the outside), Busto Arsizio grabbed the opportunity to fight back and could have extended the match had they capitalised on their only set point at 25-26.
A day prior, Igor Gorgonzola Novara had kept up the chase to firmly stay in second place, following a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) sweep on the road of Zanetti Bergamo at the PalaAgnelli.
Belgium's Britt Herbots with 17 points and Caterina Bosetti with 13 (including five blocks) for Novara were the only two players across both sides to score in double digits.
