Igor Gorgonzola Novara were pushed to the limit by Saugella Monza but managed to squeeze through 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-10) Wednesday night at home and gain advantage in the best-of-three semifinal series of the Italian Women's League.
Defending champions Imoco Volley Conegliano have also moved closer to the final, following a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-14) sweep at home in the PalaVerde of Savino Del Bene Scandicci.
Ahead of joining the Dutch national team for the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League next month, Nika Daalderop starred in Novara's win, picking up the MVP of the match award with a total score of 20 points. Lise Van Hecke of Belgium was the top scorer of the game with 22 points for Monza.
For Conegliano, led by MVP of the match Sarah Fahr who attacked for 70% (7/10) and added two blocks and two aces for a total 11 points, it was the 60th win on the trot across all seasons and competitions. They have not lost since 12 December 2019 when they fell to Bartoccini Perugia.
Paola Egonu was top scorer of Wednesday's game against Scandicci with 15 points and USA's Kim Hill who attacked for 68% (13/19) added another 14 for Conegliano.
The second matches of the semifinal series are scheduled for Saturday 10 April. Potential third and deciding matches will be played on Tuesday 13 April.
