Race intensifies for quarterfinals of Italian Women's League

Conegliano, Novara remain at top of table

The race between Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri and Savino Del Bene Scandicci for fourth place in the Regular Season and a spot in the quarterfinals of the Italian Women's League continues unabated as the competition resumed, with three full rounds (plus a few postponed matches) left to play.

Chieri dropped two precious points on Sunday, after falling at home 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 15-19) to Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio who were led by top scorers Camilla Mingardi (25), who was named MVP of the game, and Alexa Gray (23), plus six blocks by Rossella Olivotto.

This allowed Scandicci to close in within two points (with a game to spare) for fourth place following their 3-1 (25-23 25-19, 17-25, 25-13) win on the road over Bosca S. Bernardo Cuneo. Libero Enrica Merlo was selected as MVP of the match as Magdalena Stysiak powered Scandicci with her match high of 21 points.

The top four teams of the Regular Season advance directly to the Playoffs quarterfinals. Teams ranked 5-12 enter a Preliminary Round to vie for the remaining four spots.

And Saugella Monza seem to be consolidating their third place with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-18) win at home over Delta Despar Trentino on the back of 15 points from Hanna Orthmann and a further 10 each from Lise Van Hecke, Anna Danesi and MVP of the match Laura Heyrman.

The situation remained unchanged at the very top of the table, with defending champions and current leaders Imoco Volley Conegliano shutting out Zanetti Bergamo 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-18) at home and Igor Gorgonzola Novara following through with a 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-22) also at home over Bartoccini Fortinfissi Perugia.

Paola Egonu led the scoring for Conegliano with 15 points, with libero Monica De Gennaro attracting the vote of fans for the MVP of the match award.

Nika Daalderop was named MVP of the match after scoring a match high of 14 points for Novara.

The competition continues midweek and over the next weekend with a mix of rescheduled matches, including, on Saturday, the derby between the two leaders when Conegliano host Novara.
