Vero Volley Monza pulled off a major upset with a sweeping win over Sir Safety Conad Perugia, as the Italian Men's League continued over the weekend reching the halfway point of the Regular Season - though with several postponed matches still outstanding.
Setter Santiago Orduna was named MVP of the game, as he guided Monza to a stunning 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) win at home over Perugia who until that point had remained the only unbeaten side in the League.
It comes just a week after table leaders Cucine Lube Civitanova suffered their first defeat of the season, going down in four sets to Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia. But the result at Monza means Perugia missed their chance to overtake Lube ahead of the start of the second half of the Regular Season.
Monza were just that little bit better than Perugia across all skills on Sunday, with Gianluca Galassi bagging a match high 15 points.
Elsewhere in the Italian League, Allianz Milan maintained their third place in the standings, despite their third defeat of the season - this time 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-19) at home to Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza.
Georg Grozer was named MVP of the game, after he scored a match high of 21 points.
Round 12 and the start of the second half of the Regular Season in the Italian Men's League, is scheduled for next Sunday.
