Lorenne Teixeira had to spend part of her 25th birthday working but she ended the special day with a reason to celebrate as her team SESC Flamengo prevailed over in-state rivals Fluminense in the 2020-2021 Brazilian Superliga on Friday.
The opposite, who was part of Brazil's national team roster during both the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League and the 2019 FIVB World Cup, scored 15 points in SESC Flamengo’s comfortable 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-16) victory in the Rio de Janeiro derby to take home the Player of the Match award and see her teammates sing happy birthday to her on the court at the end of the match.
“It was the best present I could receive,” she commented. “We had some struggles during the first half of the season because of the multiple injuries we had, but we’ve been working hard to regain our form and it’s good to see we’re getting there with a good performance from the entire team.”
Besides Lorenne, who scored 11 points on spikes, two on blocks and two on aces, middle blocker Valquiria Dullius also played well for SESC Flamengo, and registered 14 points – six of which on blocks, five on spikes and three on aces. Outside hitter Mayara Barcelos scored ten points and was Fluminense’s leading scorer in the match.
“They have a very young team and didn’t have a lot to lose, so we had a big responsibility coming into this match,” Lorenne added. “We prepared well to contain their fast offence and our defensive system worked really well, which helped a lot.”
The victory places SESC Flamengo in fifth place in the standings with eight wins and three losses. Fluminense, who have not yet featured Beijing 2008 Olympic champion outside hitter Mari Steinbrecher, have won two of their first ten matches, and rank tenth.
Both teams have three days until their next matches as SESC Flamengo play away to Sao Caetano and Fluminense host Osasco Sao Cristovao Saude on January 12.
