UPCN back-to-back Argentinean Cup winners

UPCN Voley honoured the club’s winning tradition in the very first tournament of the 2020-2021 season as the San Juan-based side triumphed at the Argentinean Cup for a second-straight year on Thursday.

The tournament, which marked the return of volleyball in the country after nine months and reunited the nation’s seven first division teams in Mar Del Plata for an entire week, ended with UPCN downing debutantes Club Atletico Paracao 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-21) in the final.

The result gave the club coached by the veteran Fabian Armoa their 21st national trophy in 13 years of existence and made of the seven-time Argentinean League champions the winningest team in their country. UPCN also won the 2014 South American Championship and appeared in four consecutive editions of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, securing bronze medals in 2014 and 2015.

Outside hitters Valdir ‘Juninho’ Goncalves and Alejandro Toro, a former Argentina men’s national team member, were instrumental in UPCN’s victory scoring 14 points each. Veteran setter Sebastian Brajkovic was considered the Most Valuable Player of the gold medal match.

UPCN and Paracao now prepare for the start of the Argentinean League, which will begin in January. Besides the Argentinean Cup finalists, the tournament will also feature Ciudad Voley, Obras de San Juan, Once Unidos, Defensores de Banfield and UVT Voley.
