First Snow Volleyball gold for Brazil at Women’s event in Bariloche

Bariloche, Argentina, August 4, 2019 - Juliana Felisberta Da Silva, Josemari Alves and Tainá Silva Bigi from Brazil became the undefeated champions of the third and last stop on the 2019 FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour in Bariloche with a victory over hosts Estefania Milesi, Laura Moreno, Brenda Churin and Victoria Pozzo Galdon in the gold medal match.

Argentina bagged silver but also a bronze via Virginia Zonta, Julieta Puntin, Eugenia Tuliz and Cecilia Peralta, for a very profitable campaign on home soil.

Brazil walked through the decisive match with authority, not giving a single chance of a shock to Argentina. The scores of 15-7 and 15-10 were written after 24 minutes of play and Juliana was elected MVP of the women’s competition.

It was an astonishing run for the Brazilian team as they didn’t lose a single set in Bariloche, with three two-nil wins in pool play and then another three through the elimination phase.

Becoming a snow volleyball champion for the first time at the age of 40, Josemari Alves was beaming after the awarding ceremony: “This was the best experience of my entire life. To play here was the biggest opportunity anyone could have given to me and I want to say FIVB truly showed to be many steps ahead with the decision to promote this new and magnificent sport.”

Earlier in the day, in the opening match on Sunday and defying the cold in Bariloche, the Brazilian trio prevailed over Ayse Dil, Simge Yalcin, Bahanur Gokalp and Merve Celebi from Turkey with a firm 2-0 victory with scores of 15-10 and 15-9, becoming the first team from the country to enter a gold medal match in any gender.

For the home team, the road to the final included the need to rule out fellow Argentineans Zonta, Puntin, Tuliz and Peralta, with a 2-1 (10-15, 15-7, 15-11) comeback in the other semifinal match. The main Argentina team would later finish third over Turkey in straight sets, by 15-12 and 16-14 to make it three out of three in Snow Volleyball bronze medals for a very successful 2019.
