Brazil coaches look ahead to 2021 VNL

Renan will lead Brazil for a third-straight edition of the Volleyball Nations League

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 8, 2020 – The recent announcement of the schedule for the 2021 edition of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League provided a sense of clarity for Brazil national team head coaches Renan Dal Zotto and Jose Roberto Guimaraes.

Following the announcement last week, both coaches said they were pleased to have dates, locations and opponents to work with as they prepare their teams for the season ahead, which also includes the Tokyo Olympics

The men’s team coached by Renan will start their VNL campaign in the United States, where they will play the hosts, Canada and Argentina – all four teams are also qualified for Tokyo. From there, they return home to the country’s capital Brasilia, where they will face Serbia, France and Japan.

The third week will have the Brazilians on the road again, this time in Poland, where, along with the hosts, they will clash with China and Bulgaria. Tehran, Iran, will be the next stop and there Brazil and the home team will play Australia and Slovenia. The final week will have the South Americans at home for a second time, now in Campo Grande, where they will host Italy, Germany and defending champions Russia.

“The VNL is an extremely high-level tournament, it’s the most relevant annual volleyball competition and next season it will have an interesting aspect with the Tokyo Olympics coming shortly after it,” Renan said. “I’m really intrigued to see how the other teams will approach it. I believe some will choose to test some players as they try to determine their Olympic roster while others will opt to use the tournament to build up some rhythm towards the Games.”

Brazil and Italy will play a re-match of the Rio 2016 final during the fifth week of the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations Preliminary Round, in Campo Grande.

Women’s national team head coach Ze Roberto has already decided which path he’ll take with his roster. The three-time Olympic champion still has some questions he needs answers to, and will use the opportunity to battle the best teams in the world across the globe to find these solutions.

“The VNL will be especially important next season as we work to define and prepare the group of players we’ll be taking to Tokyo for the Olympics,” the veteran coach explained. “It will be very positive to play two of the five weeks at home as we can be closer to our fans and also limit the traveling.”

The Brazilian women's team will also have two weeks playing at home – the first, in which they host the United States, Canada and the Dominican Republic in Cuiaba, and the second, when they play in Brasilia against Italy, Japan and Russia.

After that, the South Americans will play in Macao, China, against the home side, Serbia and Belgium. Their only stop in Europe will follow, with Brazil facing hosts Poland, Germany and Thailand. The team’s final week before the Finals will feature Korea, the Netherlands and Turkey playing in Seoul.
