Brouwer-Thole make dream combo on German Tour

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 9, 2020 – Following the victory of Lukas Pfretzschner and Steven van de Velde in the opening leg of the German Tour, another German-Dutch tandem made it to the top with a 2-0 (21-10, 21-17) win over German-Slovenian team Sven Winter and Nejc Zemljak in the second leg final in Dusseldorf on Sunday.

2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships runner-up Julius Thole teamed up with former world champion Alexander Brouwer for the winning combination, while his regular partner Clemens Wickler is recovering from an injury. Wickler will be back at the next stop of the tour in Hamburg.

Thole emphasised the German Tour’s high level of competition, but is now faced with a difficult task for the remaining stages.

“I have now played with Alex, now the pressure is high for Clemens,” Thole said with a smile on his face.

Brouwer will miss the next stop in Hamburg, as he will head back home for the Dutch Championships at The Hague this weekend.

The German-Dutch combination finished second in pool play with three wins in four outings to advance to the semifinal round. They started with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-13) victory over brothers Lukas and Simon Pfretzschner, then defeated Armin Dollinger and Simon Kulzer 2-0 (21-12, 21-18) and the team of Philip Arne Bergmann and Lui Wust 2-0 (21-16, 21-15), before conceding their final pool play match to Paul Becker and Jonas Schroder 2-0 (21-16, 21-15).

Brouwer/Thole prevailed in their semifinal encounter with Bennet and David Poniewaz 2-1 (17-21, 21-17, 15-10). Their final rivals Winter/Zemljak, who made it to the final four as pool runners-up, beat Becker/Schroder 2-0 (21-15, 21-19).

The German Tour women’s tournament returns next week in Hamburg from August 14-16.
