German players set to start race to national championship

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 23, 2020 – Germany’s beach volleyball players have been given the target of winning their national title after the German Volleyball Federation (DVV) announced tournaments and a finals competition that will start on July 17 and culminate on Timmendorfer Strand beach in September.

The events will begin with a women’s tournament in Dusseldorf from July 17 to 19. The next week the same venue hosts a men’s tournament from July 24 to 26. A week later another women’s tournament takes place from July 31 to August 2, before a men’s tournament from August 7 to August 9 concludes the action alongside the River Rhine.

From there the action moves to Hamburg for a women’s tournament from August 14 to August 16, before the men compete from August 21 to August 23.

The finals will then take place and the German champions crowned on Timmendorfer Strand, a beachside venue on Germany’s Baltic coastline from September 3 to September 6.

“First of all, we are very happy that the Beach Summer 2020 can take place in this form,” DVV President René Hecht said. “The Road to Timmendorfer Strand gives us the opportunity to offer our national teams high-level tournaments in Germany.”

“It is extremely important for us to have a big sporting goal this year,” said Laura Ludwig, who was last in action when she and Margareta Kozuch won gold at the Rome 2019 World Tour Finals.

“We are really looking forward to the tournaments and especially the German championships. With or without a spectator - that's always a highlight.”

Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler, who won silver at the Hamburg 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships will also feature, trying to defend their national tour title.

“Clemens and I are looking forward to the tournaments,” Thole said. “We have stepped up our training to be ready for the tournament.

“I am very happy that German beach volleyball players are being offered a great beach volleyball summer thanks to the efforts of the German Volleyball Association and the organizers of the Beach League. It gives us something to look forward to.”
