It has been a remarkable three years since Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan teamed up. By the end of the 2018-19 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour the pair were top of the beach volleyball world. When the Hamburg 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships began the Canadians had won silver at the Las Vegas and Itapema 4-Star events earlier in the season.

They found their rhythm early in Hamburg and quickly built their momentum all the way to the gold medal match that they won with a 2-0 (23-21, 23-21) victory over the USA’s April Ross and Alix Klineman.

From there they added two more sets of gold. The first was in front of their home crowd at the Edmonton 3-Star, and the second at the A1 Major Vienna 5-Star.

Tokyo 2020 is on the horizon and their World Championships victory ensured a place for one Canadian team at the Olympics. Pavan reached the Rio de Janeiro 2016 quarterfinals in tandem with Heather Bansley, but for Humana-Paredes it will be her Olympic debut.
